At 5031 Manchester
Road, the Portage Lakes State Park, a Division of the Ohio Department
of Natural Resources, offers boating, water skiing, swimming, camping,
hunting, fishing, hiking trails, an astronomy observatory, and wetlands,
which attract waterfowl and shorebirds. Winter recreation on the
Lakes consists of cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling,
ice fishing and ice boating.
The annual Portage Lakes Fireworks Display, which
draws hundreds of thousands of people to the area each year on Independence
Day, can be viewed best from the beaches of Turkeyfoot Lake. The
Portage Lakes Boat Parade, also on the 4th of July, calls for boat
owners to decorate their boats – and, sometimes, themselves
– according to each year’s theme. |
